THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

Every man wants success in life, but very few are able to achieve it, at least to their complete satisfaction, those who fail are in the habit of attributing their failure to bad luck, unfavorable circumstances, to the hostility of enemies, to everything except their own defects and shortcomings. Yet if we study our own lives without any vanity, we will have to admit that our failures are mostly due to our personal defects, and seldom to external circumstances. Of course, such a study requires considerable detachment of spirit, and considerable power of self-examination. But if we could bring ourselves to do this, it will mean taking the initial steps towards success.

The ancient injunction of philosophers was, KNOW THYSELF .to the extent that we are able to know our own merits and limitations; we should be able to correct our deficiencies and cultivate our merits. But too much self-criticism often has the effect of destroying one’s self-confidence that will be altogether bad, for self-confidence is essential to success. That is what Emerson said, “Self trust is the first secret of success.”

We must have confidence in our capacity to triumph over all obstacles, whether they lie within or outside us. The timid man who has no confidence in himself can never hope to be successful in life, timidity and nervousness’ lead to hesitancy often at the threshold of success. Therefore every aspirant to success must inscribe on the tablet of his mind the well-known saying, “What a man has done, another man can do better.”
Reason ought to convince us that what one person has achieved can be achieved again and yet again by others as well. And for this, something more than even self-confidence is required.

Another quality that goes hand in hand with self-confidence is the possession of a strong will. The German philosopher of the last century preached the cult of the ‘ Will to Power’; the superman who is to rule the world, according to him must have this supreme will. But we say that we must have will to succeed, the saying, “ Where there is will there is a way”, may seem hackneyed, but it is undeniably true. If we have the will, we find the way to do things. Now this will implies the power of tense concentration. We must gather together all our powers, physical and mental, and bring them to bear on the performance of a work. If there is this single-minded concentration, if there is no diversion or wastage of efforts, success is bound to be achieved.

If the will is weak and uncertain, a man can never apply all his strength to the work that he wants to do, then he works by fits and starts; he allows temptations to divert him from his object, this is the reason why so many men fail.

Of course, success can come in any field of life in which one’s aptitudes find adequate scope; therefore we must know how to choose our vocation according to our taste and temperament. We must have pleasure in our work.
Often failures in life come through a mistaken choice of life vocation. Where the heart is lacking, the head remains indifferent, and whole-hearted application of all the faculties becomes out of question.

For this, therefore, a good deal of self-examination is needed; we must study our capacities carefully. Confucius says, “In all things success depends upon previous preparation, and without this preparation there is sure to be failure.”
If we are able to choose our career according to our natural inclinations, if we can prepare ourselves for our life’s vocation with proper care and caution, the chances of success are greatly increased. If we assist our nature, our nature will assist us many times more.
If these are borne in mind, success will not be the elusive phantom that it so often is; man is the architect of his own destiny.
A study of lives of great men bears this out, those who talk about destiny and stars are only helping to subordinate their character to unknown forces, and thus allow a spirit of defeatism to develop.
The fact often is that most of us does not have enough determination; the lives are full of hours spent in indolence, of opportunities wasted, of aims surrendered at the first opposition. If we can minimize, if not eliminate, these defects, we will find the truth of the saying that every man is the architect of his own destiny.

Let us, therefore, if we want to succeed in life, fight with all our might against doctrines, which make us lose our self-confidence, self-esteem and destroy our self-reliance.
In conclusion, a warning seems necessary; it is no use trying for the impossible; that is one must not hitch one’s wagon to the stars.
The impracticable is undesirable; nothing in the world is worth doing, if it lies outside the reached of an informed understanding and well –directed pursuit, in other words, as Longfellow said “The talent of success is nothing more than doing what you can do well”

The proverb means that success comes through failures; it is meant as an encouragement to those who fail in life, we have got to try again and again in the face of failures, if we fail once and try again, we gain experience that we help us in our second effort. By making use of these experiences we will grow wiser and feel surer and this is the foundation of success, if we build upon the foundation of wisdom and self –confidence, our success will be durable.

But if anyone takes this proverb literally, and concludes that we have to fail in order to succeed, that the more we fail the surer will be our success, he is utterly mistaken. The proverb means no such thing, every effort should be made not to fail, but no failure should have a depressing effect on us rather they should be incentives.

In order to make our failures the pillars of success, it is better to be aware of the causes of failures; the fool often fails because he thinks that success is easy. We must have confidence but not conceit, for confidence gives us strength and conceit makes us easy going, It is only when failures bring out the best in us that they come to have an important in our life, failures must be a challenge to us to do our best; we must meet failures in order to overcome them and succeed, in this view we must see failures as unpleasant accident that point the way to success.

To do this, we need to show certain mental qualities, first; we must be persevering, we must try again and again, we must be able to rise on the stepping –stones of our dead selves to something greater than what we are today; secondly, we must have courage, that is the will to conquer all obstacles on our way to success; there must not be any thought of surrender.
We must learn not to know when we are defeated, once we admit defeat, we are no longer what we were but something far less.thirdly, we must be optimist; we must have confidence, in spite of failures, we will succeed; probably if not today, tomorrow or the day after, if not in this generation, the next generation might be able to achieve it.

We must be able to look back on our failures with pride; if we fail let us feel that we have failed greatly, then we will look forward with hope and believe that we shall succeed in spite of failures and this is the proper attitude to failures one should take up. Failures can be depressing and disheartening, when honest efforts end in failure and it is difficult to keep up one’s spirit but remember that it is better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all.

I know I will face tribulations in order to succeed, I know will face condemnation in order to manage victory; these are the golden statement one should always keep in mind whenever you are faced with any unfavourable condition(s)

A STITCH IN TIME SAVES TIME

This proverb contains a counsel of prudence; timely action very often prevents great loss. Steps taken early mean less labour, better success, less chance of loss or damage. There is a slight rent in your garment; if you put in a few timely stitches, further mischief may well be prevented.
Similarly, if you do not attend to your books in time, when the examination comes you are all at sea; the mischief is beyond repair.

But the average man is easy going and indolent, he seldom likes to do things today when he can put it off till tomorrow, that is why the average man is so ordinary, and the habit of not doing things promptly, of delaying and postponing, grows from one’s early years.
A schoolboy has set his tasks for vacation, the work is not pleasant, and so he procrastinates, postpones, he waits for a time when he has no gossip or games on hand. Ask him why he is delaying; the answer is “ oh I will do it tomorrow”.

But tomorrow finds him as unready as yesterday, and the work is never done; or he will say I have no time ;I had to do this, that and some other things; this reminds the word of Chesterfield to his son: “ it is an undoubted truth that the less ones has to do, less one have time to do it. One yawns, one procrastinates, one can do it when one wills, and so one seldom does it at all; While we are idling, time slips by and opportunities are wasted, procrastinating is a concession to weakness; to give it any countenance is to foster weakness.

A fruitful cause of delaying action is a feeling of complaisance or too much dependence on luck; much feel that somehow things will come put all right in the end. Many feel that somehow things will come out all right in the end. When they do not, they blame their luck. But proper steps taken at the proper time would have eliminated chances of difficulties cropping up.

Hence we should make up our mind to act promptly and at once; never leave till tomorrow what can be done today was the maxim of that most practical of all men, Benjamin Franklin. said we must at all times be well prepared for all things. The shiftless man is always at his wit’s end hence he seeks every opportunities of posting his duties, and he paves the road to ruin with intentions that never lead to achievements but the capable man takes immediate steps because he is ready at all times if he has rented his garment, he knows where to find needle and thread to mend it.

If he has a difficulty in his textbook, he is ready to tackle it immediately, before it complicates succeeding portions, he is strong-willed, copetent and efficient and never surrenders to indolence or apathy.

There circumstances where actions may be delayed, it is where you find any action is unnecessary because it is useless, in such case it is permissible to wait to consider, and then decide. Premature actions is unwise because something may occur that may make you regret it ;it is wise to be cautious. look before you leap is a maxim of wisdom. Barring these two exceptions, the proverb holds good in all cases. Procrastination always leads to loss; promptitude is the final arbiter of destiny.
